FAQ

We’ve already built a basic GIS system with our pipeline data? Can this simply be ported to Pipeline manager?

Yes, as the data are already available in GIS format, the effort to import them into Pipeline Manager will be substantially reduced in comparison to integrating data from paper and / or CAD systems. There are powerful conversion tools that make conversion to Pipeline Manager easy and affordable.

We have a CAD based system for survey data that we use for functions such as data update, plan information and permitting. We are now interested in further IT system based functions (Right of Way administration, Pipeline condition analysis). Is it possible to use one of your modules?

We can recommend the parallel use of Pipeline manager with the relevant modules. The CAD system is simply used for the surveying tasks and provides via an interface or a central CAD/GIS database for a standard data transfer to Pipeline manager. The transfer can be executed regularly at any desired interval (daily, weekly etc). Use of Pipeline manager modules within a CAD system is not possible.

We have the task to document our cross country pipelines using a GIS and to make this available for operations. However, we only have old paper documentation that is not up to date. Therefore, the pipelines need to be located. Can this be done effectively using Pipeline Manager?

Yes. Pipeline Manager is an ideal tool to fulfil this task effectively. It is possible, for example, to follow up active pipeline location to record the position using DGPS equipment, this, in turn, can be connected to Pipeline manager and directly enter the data into Pipeline Manager.

The client has a different system, so we cannot use Pipeline Manager?

With existing interfaces and automatically data transfer is it an easy solution to use the Pipeline Manager. Please prevent at all times mushrooming spreadsheets throughout your organisation. Information will be spread and lost over all those sources. Also, the quality of information is inferior, since mistakes are not filtered out! Use one Source, one Data Set as the master and access with the Pipeline Manager over interfaces to this data.

I am an operator; what can this product do for me?

Pipeline Manager is made to support the day to day operation. The key solutions for the operator are

> a centralised, always available pipeline documentation,

> a third party activity (TPA) management,

> pipeline condition analysis

> risk assessment and

> Emergency support.

This solution covers the most demands for a safe and efficient pipeline operation.

We are an engineering company. What's in it for me?

Pipeline Manager is a very powerful solution for engineering and planning of a pipeline, because the nature of the system allows easily combining of:

> environmental impact assessment data,

> geological data,

> crossing data,

> right of way data

> elevation data and

> other pipeline surrounding data

with the pipeline route and engineering data. All needed data for pipeline route study and engineering will be available over one platform and therefore the engineering process could be optimised. The systems also provide a lot of calculations for e.g. Material take off’s (MTO) or area calculation for Right of way payments.

Contractors only need info to built, why would we need such system?

In continuation of the engineering process (see previous query) the constructor will be able to get the latest engineering “ready to build” information and the system helps to collect, check and produces required project progress and “As Built” information like survey data and pipe book.

Today and in the future, clients will demand that as built data will hand over as a GIS or Pipeline Management System or ready for their own system. Using Pipeline Manager allows delivering the data as a system or as a export for the client system.

The client doesn't ask for us to have a system, so we use individual spreadsheets. Why should we have a Pipeline Manager system?

Manage your data in one system, use only one dataset for several tasks this will save time and costs and reduce errors based on duplicate, individual spreadsheets.

There are free GIS downloads on internet available. Why would we buy Pipeline Manager?

Our product is not only a GIS, it is much more. GIS is only a reference we use for the infrastructure data.

It’s an information system, developed specifically for the pipeline industry, using a standard GIS system as a basis and in accordance with the requirements of pipeline operators. All of the pipeline specific functionality is not available together, and mostly not at all, in free GIS software.

DMC1 is a GIS system, isn't it?

DMC1 delivers software and services, that allow clients in the pipeline and cable branches to manage their underground asset data more easily, economically and effectively and therefore to have immediate access to all the relevant information. The DMC1 product Pipeline Manager is based on the MapInfo GIS.

I already use various systems, such as databases and CAD systems. Do I still need Pipeline Manager?

Yes, there will still be plenty of advantages to having a complete integrated system. We can perform a data and system assessment to determine strengths and weaknesses of the current systems and to show you how and in which areas you will be able to gain additional benefits from Pipeline Manager.

Is DMC1 Pipeline Manager already operational?

Pipeline Manager has been operational at leading pipeline operators since the mid 1990’s, including companies such as Dow Chemical (Germany), BAYERNOIL, TRM (Total-Fina-Elf Germany), PCK GmbH, Ruhr Oel, Zebra, TOTAL (The Netherlands), NACAP and others.

If we have specific requirements, can Pipeline Manager be amended?

Yes, it is possible to amend Pipeline Manager. However, in our experience it is rarely necessary to do so. Because Pipeline Manager is modular and each module is flexible and highly configurable, it can be adapted to meet the great majority of requirements without any client specific programming.

Does the software help us to comply with legislation and will it continue to do so in the future?

Yes. As an example we have a solution in place for risk assessment that will meet emerging legislation in the Netherlands and similar legislation when it is introduced into other European countries. We are able to keep up with, or indeed be in advance of legislation because we hold frequent workshops together with our clients. These workshops serve to determine the medium to long term development of Pipeline Manager. Naturally, changing legislation is a regular topic as it poses significant requirements for all of us.
